Australia won by five wickets over Sri Lanka in the current ICC men’s ODI World Cup 2023 in Lucknow after suffering two straight losses. With the victory, Sri Lanka has dropped to ninth on the standings, while Australia has climbed to eighth.
After deciding to bat first, Sri Lanka had an outstanding start. As the Lankans sought a total of 300 runs or more, openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera put up a 125-run partnership.
However, Pat Cummins took out Perera (78) and Nissanka (61), causing Sri Lanka to lose the match. The middle and lower orders for Sri Lanka absolutely failed, as they lost their final nine wickets for just 52 runs.
Adam Zampa spun his web and took four wickets as Australia held Sri Lanka to 209 in the first innings after two disappointing performances.
Mitchell Marsh got the innings off to a strong start in response. He was able to hit boundaries at will and scored 52 runs off of 51 balls.
The depth of the Australian unit allowed the team to easily surpass the score, despite Dilshan Madhushanka’s (3/38) best efforts to stall the Australian innings. With the aid of Marnus Labuschagne’s 40 and Josh Inglis’ stunning 58, the Australians were able to win the match with five wickets remaining and 88 balls remaining.
Pat Cummins and colleagues have scored their first two points as a result of their victory. As of right now, they are ranked seventh with a net run rate of -0.734.
