Former cricketer Robin Uthappa wants star pacer Mohammed Shami to play for Gujarat Tiitans in IPL 2025. Uthappa asked GT to use the RTM card for the player. The franchise released Shami during the IPL 2025 retention.
Gujarat Titans retained 5 players in the IPL 2025 retention, and Shami was not one of them. They spent an overall ₹51 crore to retain:
- Rashid Khan (₹18 crore)
- Shubman Gill (₹16.50 crore)
- Sai Sudharsan (₹8.50 crore)
- Rahul Tewatia (₹4 crore)
- Shahrukh Khan (₹4 crore).Â
Uthappa Wants GT to Use RTM Card for Shami
As GT have one RTM card remaining, Uthappa urged the Titans to go all in for the ODI World Cup 2023 leading wicket-taker in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. Uthappa was answering an interviewer from Star Sports who asked if the 3-year-old franchise should retain Shami.
“Yes, 100 percent. I wouldn’t want Shami to play anywhere else because I love how he bowls at the Narendra Modi Stadium. I think he bowls exceptionally well there and that’s given him a lot of confidence in his white-ball cricket as well,” he said.
“I think that only has amplified his red-ball bowling as well. So from the perspective of how he plays for himself and for his franchise, and also for Indian cricket, from all those different perspectives, I prefer him to play here at the Gujarat Titans,” Uthappa added.
Shami right now has returned from a long injury break and shone in his comeback for Bengla by bagging 4 wickets. BCCI is under discussion if the ace pacer should be sent to Australia for the second Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
