Pakistan fielders struggled in their 2023 World Cup encounter against Australia on Friday (October 20) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
In the tournament’s 18th match, Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and chose to bat first on a batting-friendly pitch. Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali bowled tight lines, preventing the Australian openers from getting off to a flying start. Their efforts, however, went unrewarded due to their colleagues’ weak fielding attempts.
After a couple of dot balls in the fifth over, David Warner attempted to escape the shackles by hitting a massive shot against Shaheen Afridi. The ball took a top edge and flew straight up into the air toward mid-on.
Usama Mir easily went under the ball but failed to grab the straightforward catch, much to the chagrin of everyone in his team’s camp. Mir was unable to grab his hands on the ball as it struck his chest and went to the ground.
Warner was only on 10 when he received the fortuitous reprieve. He made the Pakistan squad pay dearly by capitalizing on the occasion, scoring 163 (124). Mitchell Marsh and David Warner went on a rampage, leaving the bowlers and fielders in the dark.
Later in the innings, Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafique both dropped catches for the Men in Green. Even their ground fielding was not up to standard.
Australia amassed a mammoth total of 367/9 in 50 overs, thanks to sparkling tons from the openers. Shaheen Afridi picked up a five-wicket haul in the closing overs to save his team. Haris Rauf took three wickets as well.
