The T20I format of cricket has carved out a remarkable niche for itself amongst the dominance of the ODI and Test forms. With eight World Cups already completed, the game’s shortest format has also become an essential factor in determining how well a player performs. The quickest structure has dominated over the past two years, with two World Cups in a row, with a third one set for 2024, following the renowned ODI World Cup in India in 2023. According to popular opinion, many players are being hailed as the best T20I players; however, a select few players have consistently dominated all game modes.
Here, we’ll examine three players that performed admirably in T20I cricket but terribly in ODI.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav, currently ranked as the best T20I batter in the world, is a famous Indian batsman who has taken the cricketing world by storm with his explosive batting style. The 32-year-old is just two centuries shy of breaking the T20I century record. His ODI statistics are less encouraging because he has yet to score a three-figure run in ODI cricket, which is unusual given his T20I achievements.
Moeen Ali
The talented England veteran, currently ranked ninth among T20I all-rounders, was also a pivotal contributor to England’s successful campaign at the 20-20 World Cup in 2022. However, he has yet to be all that remarkable in one-day international cricket, with only nine half-centuries in 99 innings, a batting average of 25.15 and a strike rate of 99.24.
Wanindu Hasaranga
Wanindu Hasaranga, a gifted all-rounder for Sri Lanka, has proven himself in T20 international cricket with both the bat and the ball. He has made 55 T20I matches, claimed 89 kills, and has a 6.8 economy rate. He has significantly improved the Sri Lankan team in this particular game format. Hasaranga is currently ranked second among T20 International bowlers and fourth among T20 International all-rounders.
But regarding ODI performance, Hasaranga has only taken 39 wickets in 37 games at a very expensive average of 38.6, which is drastically different from his reputation in T20I cricket.
