India will be looking to build momentum ahead of the 2023 World Cup as a few players return to the side, some struggle to regain form, and others fight for their place in the team. The team has already earned their spot in the final of the World Test Championship, as they overcame Australia 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Now, they will face the same opponents in the Australia ODI series in Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Chennai.
Let’s look at three players for whom this series would be crucial.
#1 Ravindra Jadeja
In 2021, Ravindra Jadeja appeared in only three ODIs, which opened up the vacancy in India’s squad. With Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Ahmed having all featured for India ODI cricket recently, it is up to Jadeja to prove his worth through impressive performances in the upcoming Australia ODI series.
#2 Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav’s ODI career has been disappointing, given his talent. His average of 28.86 is far below what should be expected from such a gifted player. His pattern of dismissals shows that he has yet to be able to get the right balance between defense and aggression, often trying to hit aerial shots when there is plenty of time left in the innings.
#3 Shardul Thakur
Shardul Thakur is a potential contender as the third seamer and all-rounder for the 2023 World Cup. As of now, however, his spot in the team is not yet certain. The selection will depend on the requirements of the team – extra pace or batting stability – on the given day. Currently, Thakur holds a slight advantage due to his experience.
