Star Indian opener Shubman Gill is still in the process of recovering from a diagnosed case of dengue, which occurred prior to the 2023 World Cup. As per reports from The Indian Express, it is highly probable that Gill will not be able to participate in the upcoming match against Pakistan, scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14th.
Due to his ongoing fever, Shubman Gill will not be accompanying the squad to Delhi as stated by the BCCI. He was admitted to a hospital in Chennai after experiencing fatigue and has been advised 48 hours of rest before undergoing further assessment on Thursday.
If the team management requests a replacement for Shubman Gill, the selection committee would most likely make Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ruturaj Gaikwad available to travel with the squad. According to the article, Gill might be out of commission for more than a week.
Shubman Gill’s Absence Could Spell Disaster for India Against Pakistan
Shuman Gill’s absence is a significant loss to the Men in Blue given his form in 2023, particularly in ODIs. In the first game, his substitute in the XI, Ishan Kishan, was dismissed for a golden duck against Australia, and the hosts almost paid a high price for Gill’s absence.
While the goal may be to have Gill fit for the fourth game, which will be against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19, the youthful opener will be closely monitored. This is because, even if the fever subsides during dengue fever, the weakness might persist and further delay a recovery.
