Shubman Gill will miss India’s second World Cup match as well, against Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday, after being diagnosed with dengue and sitting out of their opening game against Australia in Chennai.
The BCCI announced that Shubman Gill will not accompany the team to Delhi. Instead, he will remain in Chennai under the care of the medical team.
With just two days remaining before the Australia game, head coach Rahul Dravid provided an update on player Shubman Gill’s health. Dravid expressed some optimism, stating that Gill is feeling better compared to the previous day. However, the medical team continues to monitor him closely on a daily basis. With 36 hours left until the match, they will assess his condition and make a decision as close to the last minute as possible.
Unfortunately, despite waiting until this morning, Gill was unable to recover in time for the match. Rohit Sharma announced this during the toss against Australia.
Ishan Kishan to Open for India in Shubman Gill’s Absence
In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan batted first with Rohit. Despite being knocked to 2 for 3 in a 200-run chase – Kishan, Rohit, and Shreyas Iyer were all out for ducks – India rallied to reach the goal with six wickets in hand and 52 balls to spare.
Gill leads the ODI run-getters with 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. He has two hundred and a half-century in his past four ODIs.
Following their game against Afghanistan on October 11, India will fly from Delhi to Ahmedabad for their October 14 match against Pakistan.
