Is Shubhman Gill worthy to be called the prince of Indian cricket? Cricket pundit Aakash Chopra thinks so. And Chopra brings some interesting stats to the table to back his argument. Let’s have a check on that.
Shubhman Gill has been struggling to find a form for a year. The player who had come with great hype couldn’t live up to it in the last 365 days. This ended up him losing his position in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad. But Gill later was appointed as India’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket. This unconditional backing from the management became somewhat fruitful as Gill hit a ton (119 out of 172 balls) in the first Test match against Bangladesh last week. India went on to win the match to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series.
Aakash Sharma Says Calling Shubhman Gill the Prince of Indian Cricket is Not Wrong
Now Aakash Chopra brings a unique argument to back Gill’s name as the prince of Indian cricket. According to him, Gill has more tons than any other Indian player in this decade. The stats say Gill outscored King Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma.
“Who has scored the most hundreds for Team India in this decade? It’s a very interesting one. There was a tweet from CricCrazyJohns, and we said we never realized that. He wrote about the most hundreds for India in this decade in international cricket – Shubman Gill has 12 hundreds in 114 innings. It is absolutely phenomenal,” he said
“Rohit Sharma, in the same timeframe, has played 148 knocks and scored 10 centuries. Virat Kohli has played 149 knocks and scored 10 centuries, and both of them are our GOATs (greatest of all times). So Shubman Gill is going far ahead with 12 centuries. We are not giving him the status of ‘Prince’ wrongly,” he added.
Is Gill worthy to be called the prince of Indian cricket? Before getting the conclusion on that, let’s take a brief moment to discuss the king of Indian cricket, Virat Kohli. What did he do to deserve this title? What’s the key factor that differentiates him from others?
The answer could be his consistency and relentless perseverance to stay at the top. Virat always shows up in the big matches and tournaments. He feeds on the pressure. This attitude, coupled with his spectacular skillsets, makes him impeccable in cricket.
In contrast to that, we have seen Shubhman Gill crumble when it matters the most. It’s too harsh to judge him on this as he is still young. But at the same time, the lack of consistency and unreliability might have caused a tint on his ‘prince’ status. It’s best if we let him take his time to improve and regain his consistency rather than putting huge pressure on ‘Virat Kohli’s heir’ in the Indian cricket team.
