Former Indian bowler RP Singh believes there are significant variations in the batting methods of emerging hitter Yashasvi Jaiswal and famous opener Virender Sehwag.
Jaiswal’s counter-attacking batting approach in Tests has garnered similarities to Sehwag’s. The left-hander hit a six to get his century, something Sehwag was known for.
After Day 1 of the second India-England Test in Vishakapatnam ended, RP Singh shared with Cricbuzz. He detailed the varying strategies of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virender Sehwag:
The former bowler observed Jaiswal’s clarity when batting:
Jaiswal finished Day 1 with a career-best 179* as India scored 336-6 at Stumps. The youthful opener scored more than half of his team’s runs, with Shubhman Gill scoring the next most with 34. Interestingly, every hitter in the top seven received a start, but only Jaiswal scored heavily.
Yashasvi Jaiswal got crucial partnerships consistently: RP Singh
RP Singh also praised Yashasvi Jaiswal for his hard work in ensuring that India has partnerships in place. The majority of the wickets were lost due to cheap dismissals, but Jaiswal’s undefeated century means that the hosts still have time to make apologies.
Jaiswal has Ravichandran Ashwin (5 off 10) to keep him company, but there won’t be much batting beyond that. The kid may need to farm the strike and score critical runs with the lower order.
