Rohit Sharma, Team India’s skipper, has begun his preparations for the forthcoming South Africa trip with hard gym workouts. He just returned to Mumbai from a family holiday in the United Kingdom. Rohit went there to recover after a painful loss in the 2023 World Cup final last month.

The key player sat out during the five-game T20I stretch against Australia. He chose to skip the one-day games in South Africa, just like some other experienced players including Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah did.

The three players will be back in the game for the two-Test series versus South Africa later this month. It starts with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion.

Irfan Pathan, a former Indian all-rounder, has praised Rohit Sharma and believes he should continue to captain Team India.

Irfan praised Rohit for leading from the front and taking an aggressive attitude, dubbing him the true captain of Indian cricket. Irfan Pathan stated during a conversation on the Star Sports show ‘Game Plan’:

“A lot of people are talking about the need for a fresh approach in T20 cricket, but I think guys like Rohit, the way he is going at the moment, he has been the real leader of Indian cricket. The way he has changed the approach, taken the responsibility on his shoulders and taken the team forward, he has actually changed the mindset. That is why I really hope that Rohit Sharma continues as the leader.”

Pathan adds to the argument about the selection of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the 2024 T20 World Cup:

“I personally would like to see them. The reason for that is where we are playing the World Cup. The World Cup is in the West Indies, and those pitches have changed. If you look at the CPL (Caribbean Premier League) and local cricket there as well, the batters need to work really hard. This is where the experience comes in.”
