Rohit Sharma, India’s team leader, scored a record fifth T20I century on Wednesday. This happened during the deciding match against Afghanistan in Bengaluru.
His exceptional three-figure score sets him apart. He bypassed Glenn Maxwell and Suryakumar Yadav. These two players used to share this record with him. This is not just Rohit Sharma’s fifth T20I century, but also his best score in the format so far.
After opting to bat first, the opening batsman helped India overcome a precarious scenario with an unbroken 121 runs off 69 deliveries. Technically Rohit was off the mark with a boundary, but because to an improper umpiring ruling, he could not legally score his first run until the sixth delivery.
India’s team found it tough against the Afghan bowlers. Rohit Sharma saw his teammates get out one after the other early in the game. Then, Rinku Singh partnered with him. They built a huge partnership for the fifth wicket. This helped them surpass 200 runs quite easily in the end.
Recently, Suryakumar Yadav and Glenn Maxwell equaled Rohit Sharma’s record in the latter half of 2023. The top-ranked T20I batter hit a hundred in the third T20I playing South Africa. Glenn Maxwell scored a century in a big run chase against India in Guwahati after the ODI World Cup in 2023.
Rohit Sharma’s first T20I century came in 2015
In 2015, the Hitman’s first T20I century happened. But, it didn’t lead to victory against South Africa in Dharamsala. Nevertheless, in 2017, he achieved a lightning-fast T20 record─ a century against Sri Lanka in Indore!
During the 2018 Ireland tour, he came close to scoring a century, but he finally scored his third century in the series finale in Bristol versus England. Only two games later, in a T20I victory against the West Indies in Lucknow, he hit an undefeated 111 to record his fourth century.
