India and England are gearing up for an exciting face-off in the 2023 World Cup at Lucknow on October 28. The two teams have had quite different journeys in the first part of the round-robin stage. India, being flawless hosts, have bagged victories in all their five games. England, on the other hand, has managed to clinch just one win out of their five matches so far.
India is currently occupying the second position on the scoreboard, falling behind South Africa due to a lower net run rate, despite South Africa having played an additional match. Meanwhile, the Three Lions are penultimate on the leaderboard and might even drop to the last position if the Netherlands clinches a win against Bangladesh in today’s game.
Both sides have a long history of success in cricket. While India has two ODI World Cup titles, England won their first and only ODI World Cup in 2019. They’ve met eight times in the quadrennial competition, with England winning the series 4-3 (one match was a draw).
On that topic, let’s go at the last five ODI World Cup games between India and England.
1. IND vs ENG – 2019 WC, Birmingham
England defeated India by 31 runs on their route to winning the 2019 World Cup. This was India’s lone defeat throughout the league round, as they ended as table-toppers.
Jonny Bairstow’s 111 was ably backed by opener Jason Roy’s 66 and Joe Root’s 44. Ben Stokes hit a quickfire 79 to help his team to a massive score of 337. Mohammad Shami selected a fifer.
In reply, Rohit Sharma blasted 102 before succumbing to Chris Woakes. The middle order chipped in with some solid runs, but the Men in Blue were always behind the eight ball and fell 32 runs short of the 338-run mark.
2. IND vs ENG – 2011 WC, Bangalore
The most recent match between these sides came in the 2011 World Cup, which India won. Both teams scored precisely 338 runs in this match, which ended in a draw at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
After Captain MS Dhoni won the coin toss and decided to bat first, Sachin Tendulkar impressively scored 120 runs in the opening innings. Both Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh also performed commendably, each managing to notch up half-centuries. Despite their efforts, India was completely bowled out at 338 runs, with just one remaining ball left in play. Meanwhile, Tim Bresnan achieved a career high, registering his best figures at 5/48.
Andrew Strauss recorded his best ODI score, 158, in the run chase. Despite his and Ian Bell’s best efforts, the Three Lions came just short of an epic run chase.
3. IND vs ENG – 2003 WC, Durban
India last triumphed over England in the ODI World Cup a whole two decades back. It was during the Pool A match of the 2003 World Cup, hosted by South Africa, when India saw a huge win by 82 runs.
Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid’s outstanding performance of scoring half-centuries boosted their country’s score to a respectable 250 runs, which was quite a substantial score during that time. Meanwhile, Andrew Flintoff demonstrated skillful bowling by claiming two wickets while only giving away 15 runs in his allotted ten overs, which notably included a pair of maidens.
In the second inning, Ashish Nehra was on fire, rattling the top-order batsmen. In ten overs, he took six wickets and allowed only 23 runs. Flintoff scored 64 runs off 73 balls, but it was in vain because the other hitters were knocked out for 168 runs.
4. IND vs ENG – 1999 WC, Birmingham
The Men in Blue defeated the Three Lions in the 1999 World Cup, which Australia won. The hosts had a forgettable tournament, finishing with only two wins in the group round.
Rahul Dravid batted 82 balls and scored 53 runs. Thanks to crucial contributions from Sourav Ganguly and Ajay Jadeja, the Mohammad Azharuddin-led team huffed and puffed their way to 232.
Nasser Hussain and Graham Thorpe had some time to adjust but were fired in their 30s. The Indian bowling team had a comprehensive effort, with four bowlers taking two or more wickets and limiting England to 169 runs. Ganguly was named the match’s MVP after taking three wickets for 27 runs in eight overs.
5. IND vs ENG – 1992 WC, Perth
In the 1992 Benson Hedges World Cup in Australia, India and England faced. England finished second to Pakistan in the competition. The subcontinental team, on the other hand, lost five of their eight round-robin games and was eliminated early.
Graham Gooch’s 51 and Robin Smith’s 91 ensured that the batting side scored a comfortable 236/9 in the first innings. Ravi Shastri disrupted Gooch and Smith’s 110-run partnership before leading his team to victory in the second innings.
Before getting run out, Shastri scored 57 runs off 112 deliveries. Shastri created 63-run partnerships with Kris Srikkanth and Sachin Tendulkar. Subroto Banerjee scored an undefeated 25 from 16 balls, but it was too late as his team fell 10 runs short of the mark.
