Ricky Ponting, the Delhi Capitals (DC) coach, is anticipating an explosive season from opening batter Prithvi Shaw in the upcoming 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League. The veteran, who is 48 years old, said that Shaw’s work ethic pleased him and that he expects big things from the youngster this year. Shaw has a good IPL stat line, scoring 1588 runs with a strike rate of 147.25 in 63 games. The right-hander maintained a strike rate of 152.97 last season, but he batted in only 283 runs in 10 games for an average of just 28.30. Because of his lackluster track record, he will attempt to fix it in IPL 2023.
Ponting told reporters in Delhi on March 24 that he sees a lot of potential in the youngster and that the actual “Prithvi Shaw” will emerge in IPL 2023. The Tasmanian was cited on ESPN Cricinfo as saying:
“He has trained harder and better than I’ve ever seen, leading into an IPL and in better physical shape than I have ever seen him. Also, I spoke to him the other day about his attitude, how he’s working, and how things are going. I honestly feel this will be his greatest season ever in the Indian Premier League.”
“He has that different look in his eye this year, and you can see he’s probably hungrier than ever. Yes, he’s had some success for us, but with his talent and ability, we’ll see the honest Prithvi Shaw this season.
Prithvi Shaw’s Ranji Performance
Shaw had a spectacular Ranji Trophy season this year, smashing 595 runs in six games for Mumbai at an average of 59.50. He is expected to begin batting with David Warner in IPL 2023. A score of 379 against Assam was his personal best and the second-highest in Ranji Trophy history.
Ricky Ponting also added:
“As a player, sometimes you want to play cricket, you want to get out there and represent your team, your franchise, and your country, but sometimes you don’t see the bigger picture of it. There’s a bigger picture out there than just you playing cricket, and it’s how everyone else perceives you in the real world.”
The Delhi Capitals’ 2023 Indian Premier League schedule kicks out in Lucknow on April 1 against the Lucknow Super Giants.
