Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq took the final wicket in the important 2024 T20 World Cup Super 8 match against Bangladesh, sending his team into the semifinals. Naveen-ul-Haq removed Mustafizur Rahman for a golden duck in the penultimate over of Bangladesh’s 105-run defeat at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent on Monday, June 24.
Bangladesh were just ahead of the DLS par score in the 19th over, but Taskin Ahmed’s wicket turned the equation on its head. Mustafizur Rahman came out at No. 11 with nine runs needed from eight deliveries. The rain briefly fell before Rahman could take the strike, but no overs were lost, and the target stayed unchanged.
Naveen-ul-Haq chose to bowl a full and straight delivery from around the wicket, which Rahman struggled to cope with. The ball smacked him directly on the front pad, so there was no contact with the bat. The umpire had no difficulty in handing it out, resulting in wild jubilation in the Afghan camp.
Bangladesh did go upstairs for a review, but it was fruitless because it merely made the on-field decision clearer.
Take a look at the historical event right here:
Naveen-ul-Haq was named Player of the Match following his match-winning stint of 4-26 in 3.5 overs.
Afghanistan’s triumph not only ensures their place in the semifinals, but also eliminates Australia.
