Dewald Brevis, a young South African batter, has been retained by the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction.

Dewald Brevis recently expressed his delight at the prospect of representing the five-time winners in yet another edition of the Indian T20 tournament. On Instagram, he posted a flashback photo of himself wearing the MI helmet for the first time, writing:

“MyMemoryBank. IPL 2022. Receiving my first Mumbai Indians kit. I couldn’t resist taking a selfie to share with my family. Can’t wait for IPL 2024.”

At the IPL 2022 auction, the Mumbai-based franchise paid 3 crore to sign Dewald Brevis. Many consider the 20-year-old, popularly nicknamed as ‘Baby AB’ owing to his 360-degree strokeplay, to be the next big thing in T20 cricket.

Though he hasn’t had many chance­s to show his skills in the IPL, with only seven game­s under his belt. Dewald Brevis spe­nt the 2023 season sideline­d, without participating in a match.

After the league stage of the IPL 2023, Mumbai finished fourth in the points standings. In the Eliminator, they defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by an 81-run margin to advance to Qualifier 2.

However, the team failed to go to the final, losing by 62 runs against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the elimination round. MI has made a few noticeable modifications in preparation for the next mini-auction.

The team sent Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in exchange for Gujarat’s previous star player Hardik Pandya. Both transactions were entirely cash.

The IPL 2024 mini-auction will take place on December 19 in Dubai. Mumbai enters the tournament with a total purse of 17.75 crore.
