Chennai Super Kings, the CSK team, had their fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana take a good wicket to get out Romario Shepherd. This dismissal came in an IPL 2024 match played at Wankhede Stadium against Mumbai Indians, which is the MI squad. It was Pathirana’s fourth wicket in that innings when he got Shepherd out.
The ball that got Shepherd out was bowled in the 18th over of MI’s innings, when they needed a very high run-rate of over 16 runs per over. Matheesha Pathirana, who is just 21 years old, bowled a full and fast delivery that swung in sharply to hit the leg stump and knocked out Shepherd, who could only score 1 run in that over.

Earlier, the Super Kings scored 206 after Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya sent the visiting team into bat. Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad both scored half century and had a 90-run stand. Nonetheless, MS Dhoni’s fireworks, with 20 runs off four deliveries, including three straight sixes in the penultimate over, made a major difference.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan fast struck with his first delivery of the stint, knocking Ishan Kishan for 23, before removing the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav for a two-ball duck. While Rohit Sharma went hard from one end, the home team struggled to gain momentum in the middle overs. The MI skipper also failed, scoring only two runs off six balls.
It all came down to an unbelievable 34 off the final over, when Ruturaj Gaikwad pitched the ball to Pathirana, who bowled well despite allowing two boundaries. Matheesha Pathirana finally finished with 4-0-27-4 and earned the Player of the Match award.
Rohit scored his second IPL century and remained undefeated on 105 from 63 deliveries, but the five-time winners fell 20 runs short.
It was the reigning champions’ fourth win of the season and the Mumbai Indians’ fourth defeat, with only two victories.
