Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper KL Rahul will supposedly miss the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 due to an injury after the team’s loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday, May 1.
In the second over of the first innings, Rahul appeared to pull his hamstring while chasing the ball. Before the LSG medical staff arrived for their initial assessment, Rahul clutched his leg and collapsed.
His absence, though, may not be for 1 or 2 matches, as he is scheduled to be sent to Mumbai for scans shortly after the BCCI medical staff takes over his case. KL Rahul appears to be in a race against time to be ready for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia, which begins on June 7 in England. On the condition of anonymity, a top BCCI source with an understanding of the situation informed PTI.
“KL is currently with the team in Lucknow but he is leaving the camp on Thursday after watching the game against CSK on Wednesday. His scans will be done in Mumbai at the BCCI designated medical facility. His case as well as Jaydev’s case will be handled by BCCI.”
Is KL Rahul fit enough for WTC
The insider continued, confirming that no scans have been performed to determine the degree of Rahul’s injuries as of yet:
“When someone sustains an injury like this, there is considerable amount of pain and swelling that is there in and around the area. The swelling takes around 24 to 48 hours to heal and only after that can you perform the scan.
“Since he is an important member of Test team, it would only be prudent that he doesn’t take any further part in IPL. Once the scans ascertain the degree of injury, the BCCI medical team will decide the course of action.”
KL Rahul had a disappointing IPL 2023 season, scoring 274 runs in nine innings. Given his credentials in England, the 31-year-old was expected to bat in the middle order in the WTC Final. In Rishabh Pant’s absence, he was also the favourite to don the gloves.
