On Wednesday, March 27, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 31 runs in a run-fest at Uppal Stadium, securing their first win in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
The game in Hyderabad that night was truly remarkable. Runs piled up at an astonishing rate, exceeding 500 across the entire match
The mayhem began with Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 of 23) wreaking havoc on the MI bowlers, scoring 68 runs off only 22 balls for the second wicket.
Aiden Markram (42*) and Heinrich Klaasen (80*) then capitalised on the top-order’s efforts, scoring 116* runs off 54 deliveries to take SRH’s first-innings total to a massive 277/3.
Chasing a target of this size required a unique effort from MI’s hitters. Rohit Sharma’s 200th IPL match began quickly with his opening partner, Ishan Kishan. Tilak Varma then threatened to steal the game away by hitting a 34-ball 64.
However, none of the other hitters managed to break the 50-run barrier, and MI ultimately fell short by 31 runs. Abhishek, who scored 63 off only 23 balls, was named Player of the Match for his spirited performance.
Unsurprisingly, the high-scoring thriller saw a flurry of records shattered. Here are the five astounding exploits accomplished during SRH’s tremendous victory.
5. Most runs in first 10 overs in an IPL innings
It was always going to be a hard night for MI bowlers as SRH made their intentions known from the start. With Travis Head leading the charge early on, SRH scored 81 runs on the powerplay.
Abhishek Sharma too appeared to be in good form as SRH scored 148 runs after 10 overs.
This is the most runs any side has scored at the 10-over point, shattering the previous record of Punjab Kings (PBKS), who scored 131 in the first half of their IPL 2014 match versus SRH.
Later in the game, Mumbai came very near to breaking SRH’s record, as the five-time winners scored 141 runs in their first 10 overs.
4. Worst bowling figures on IPL debut
Before their match against SRH, Mumbai made one change to their roster, replacing Luke Wood with 17-year-old Kwena Maphaka.
The teenage left-handed fast bowler stood out during the recent U-19 Cricket World Cup 2024. He claimed the maximum wickets, a stellar 21, at an excellent average of just 9.71.
Sadly, the South African youngster had a dreadful debut game. He conceded a massive 66 runs in his allotted four overs. Alarmingly, his bowling figures of 0/66 now hold the dubious record of being the worst-ever on an IPL debut.
Michael Neser’s 0/62 for Punjab against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2013 is now ranked second on the list.
3. Most sixes in a T20 match
It was a true six-hitting fiesta in Uppal, with hitters finding it easier to blast sixes than locate spaces to hit fours. Throughout the innings, batters on both sides shown incredible power hitting abilities.
SRH set the tone early, scoring 18 sixes before Mumbai’s hitters blasted 20 maximums in the second innings.
The contest featured a record-breaking 38 sixes, the most in any T20 encounter. This astounding achievement shattered the previous record of 37 sixes, which had been set twice previously, once in the Afghanistan Premier League and once in the Caribbean Premier League.
2. Highest T20 match aggregate score
The run-fest between SRH and MI is currently the highest-scoring T20 match. Over the course of 40 overs, the two sides scored a total of 523 runs. While SRH scored 277/3, the five-time champs managed 246/5.
Previously, South Africa (259/4) and the West Indies (258/5) held the record for the highest aggregate score during the second T20I in March 2023, totaling 517 runs.
Aside from that, Mumbai’s 246/5 is currently the highest team total in the second innings of an IPL game, surpassing the Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) 226/6 against PBKS in 2020.
1. Highest team total in IPL history
The Orange Army rewrote the record books against the Mumbai Indians. Their score of 277/3 is the best ever achieved by an IPL side, breaking the previous mark of 263 set by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2013.
RCB achieved their target against the now-defunct Pune Warriors India (PWI).
