Getting a hat-trick in cricket is remarkable, with the bowler taking three wickets in three consecutive deliveries. Although some feel it’s easier to achieve this in shorter formats like T20s, only a few bowlers have managed it. Recently, Issy Wong of the Mumbai Indians became the first player to secure a hat-trick in the Women’s Premier League. Here are the first bowlers to take hat tricks in various T20 leagues.
1. Lakshmipathy Balaji: The First Bowler to Take a Hat-Trick in IPL
On May 10, 2008, Lakshmipathy Balaji, a former Chennai Super Kings pacer, claimed the first hat-trick in IPL history against Kings XI Punjab. He dismissed Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and VRV Singh in successive deliveries, finishing with remarkable figures of 5/24 and leading CSK to an 18-run victory.
2. BBL – Xavier Doherty
In the 2012/13 season of Australia’s Big Bash League, Xavier Doherty became the first player to take a hat-trick. He achieved this feat for Hobart Hurricanes against Sydney Thunder. Doherty claimed the wickets of Simon Keen, Ryan Carter, and Cameron Borgas. Keen was caught out, Carter was stumped, and Borgas was trapped in front of his stumps.
3. PSL – Mohammad Amir
On February 5, 2016, Mohammad Amir, a left-arm fast bowler from Pakistan, created history in the Pakistan Super League by taking a hat-trick. Representing Karachi Kings against Lahore Qalandars at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Amir became the first bowler to claim three wickets in three consecutive balls in a PSL match. He dismissed Dwayne Bravo, Zohaib Khan, and Kevon Cooper in the 19th over to help his team secure a victory.
4. LPL – Wanindu Hasaranga
Last year, Wanindu Hasaranga, an all-rounder from Sri Lanka, created history by taking the first hat-trick in the Lanka Premier League. Representing the Kandy Falcons against the Colombo Stars, Hasaranga claimed the wickets of Dinesh Chandimal, Benny Howell, and Seekuge Prasanna in three consecutive balls. Hasaranga’s exceptional performance aided Kandy Falcons in securing a dominant 109-run victory over the Stars in that match.
5. CPL – Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan, an Afghan cricket star, is one of the top T20 bowlers in the world, having played in numerous T20 leagues worldwide. He also holds the distinction of taking the first hat trick in a Caribbean Premier League match. During the Eliminator match of the CPL 2017, playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors against Jamaica Tallawahs, Khan demonstrated his skills by claiming three wickets in three consecutive balls. He dismissed Andre McCarthy, Jonathan Foo, and Rovman Powell in the 15th by hitting their stumps off back-to-back deliveries.
6. BPL – Mohammad Sami
In 2012, Mohammad Sami, a former Pakistani fast bowler, claimed the first hat-trick of the Bangladesh Premier League while playing for Duronto Rajshahi against Dhaka Gladiators. Sami took three wickets in three consecutive balls in the 20th over of the match. Darren Stevens, Aftab Ahmed, and Naved-ul-Hasan were the batsmen who fell victim to Sami’s hat trick, all getting bowled out. Rajshahi won the match by 14 runs.
