India’s best batsman, Virat Kohli, scored an impressive 186 runs off 364 balls on the fourth day of the fourth Test match against Australia. The series finale Test match is being played in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. While facing some crafty Australian spin bowling, Kohli applied himself and paid a steep price for his wicket. On Day 4, the former Indian captain resumed play at 59 and was tasked with moving India’s score along.
He had a slump in his innings but overcame it and continued scoring runs at a steady clip. After 1,205 days, the ex-Indian captain finally scored his 28th Test century. The Delhi native kept the pressure on the opposition even after reaching century status, helping India surpass Australia’s first-innings score of 480.
By scoring his magnificent century, Kohli broke a few records. In the fourth Test against Australia, he scored 186 runs, breaking five records.
1. World’s fastest homegrown player to reach 11,000 runs in international competition.
The modern legend reached 11,000 international runs for India in India, breaking a record during his outstanding 186-run knock. Kohli became the fastest hitter in history to amass 11,000 international runs when he did so at home in 224 innings.
Before this, the record had been shared by Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, who both achieved the feat in their respective countries in 246 innings. With an overall average of 58.46 and a total of 35 tons and 51 half-centuries, Kohli now has 11,050 runs in India across all formats.
2. Second-most runs scored against Australia in an international match
When facing the Australian team, Kohli tends to play at his best. The fact that he scored 4,856 runs in international cricket against them indicates this. Outside of Sachin Tendulkar’s 6,707 runs, this is the second-highest total ever achieved by a hitter in any format against Australia.
Kohli broke the record previously held by Brian Lara on Sunday. This West Indies great has amassed 4,714 runs in his career against Australia.
3. Ranked as India’s highest scorer at the WTC
Notwithstanding his recent struggles, Virat Kohli has surpassed his teammates to become India’s all-time leading run scorer in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Since the 2019 WTC began, Kohli has scored 1,797 runs (in 52 innings). He surpassed India’s previous WTC batting leader, Rohit Sharma, who had amassed 1,794 runs (in 36 innings). This number incorporates the 2019-21 and 2021-23 WTC periods.
4. Quickest to hit 75 international centuries
Virat Kohli, a contemporary master, has scored 75 international hundreds for India. The world knows that he is only the second batsman in history to score as many international centuries as he has and did so in the least amount of time.
The 566 innings it took Sachin Tendulkar to become the first player to score 75 international tons are a testament to his dominance. It took Kohli 552 innings to reach his 75th global century for India across all forms.
5. The Individual with the highest score in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Rather than being favourable to bowlers, the pitch in Ahmedabad has been more favourable to batters. This has led to some massive totals in the fourth Test. In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, four of the top five highest individual scores have come from Ahmedabad. Nonetheless, Kohli’s massive 186-run knock is the highest score by a particular hitter in the current series. He outscored Usman Khawaja’s 180 from Day 1 and Day 2 .
