Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry has made a world record for playing the maximum number of matches in T20 World Cups. Perry has achieved the feat in her team’s game against South Africa on Saturday, February 18, at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
Ellyse Perry has even surpassed Indian star player Rohit Sharma on an elite list while making history. She is now the most capped player in the entire history of T20 World Cups. She holds 39 caps in the ICC T20 World Cups. Ellyse had tied Rohit Sharma’s record during a game against Sri Lanka on February 16; however, she now stands alone at the top. Rohit Sharma has played 39 matches in the T20 world cups from the year 2007 to 2022. Rohit and Ellyse are the few players who have played in all three formats of this mega event. The Aussie quickly made her debut in T20 cricket at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2008 against England, and her all-around performance helped Australia beat England.
Ellyse Perry has 362 runs and 40 wickets in 40 matches in T20 WCs. She is a five-time T20 World Cup winner and is eyeing her sixth title. The 32-year-old has played 137 T20Is in her career. She has 1526 runs and 122 wickets in the shortest format.
Perry has had only one opportunity to bat in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup so far, where she has scored 40 runs and helped her team secure a massive 97 runs win over New Zealand. In that game, she played at an impressive strike rate of 181.81. Perry has also been excellent with the ball, picking up two wickets from four overs at an excellent economy rate of 5.50.
Australia, with four wins, is leading Group A with 8 points and has an NRR of +2.149. They are the only team qualified for the tournament’s semi-finals and will be seen playing again in the 1st semi-final on February 23.
India is currently in second place with two wins from three matches. The Women in Blue, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, are favoured to defeat Ireland and make it to the second round. However, they lost their previous game against England.
