On Wednesday, February 15, Deepti Sharma made history by becoming the first Indian bowler to take 100 wickets in T20 Internationals. The 25-year-old accomplished the milestone during the ongoing match between West Indies Women (WI-W) at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.
This incredible feat has been a long time in the making for Sharma and she has been a remarkable bowler for the Indian national team for many years. She has been a consistent performer for the team and her hard work and dedication have finally paid off with this remarkable milestone.
Deepti Sharma was the standout bowler for India, taking 3 wickets in her 4 overs and helping India Women restrict West Indies Women to 118-6 in 20 overs.
So far, the all-rounder has taken 100 wickets in 89 Twenty20 Internationals. She has surpassed Poonam Yadav, who had claimed 98 wickets in 72 matches. In totality, Anisa Mohammed of WI-W holds the record with 125 wickets in 117 T20Is.
It is interesting to note that no Indian male cricketer has achieved 100 wickets in T20Is. Yuzvendra Chahal, a leg-spinner, is the highest wicket-taker with 91 wickets in 75 matches.
Deepti has been the most successful bowler of the recently completed T20I series between South African Women (SA-W) and WI-W, having taken nine wickets in five matches. As India Women try to achieve their first Women’s T20 World Cup title, her role will be vital. Sharma has been a great asset for the Indian team, taking wickets at crucial times and making sure that the team is always in the game.
