During Australia’s match against the Netherlands in Delhi on Wednesday, David Warner tied Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar for the second most World Cup hundreds with six.
Following a slow start to the competition, David Warner came into his own in Australia’s previous match against Pakistan, scoring 124 off 123 balls. Following that, the 36-year-old hit his second consecutive century against a feeble Netherlands attack, reaching three figures in only 91 deliveries.
Tendulkar participated in six World Cups throughout his great career, but David Warner is only appearing in his third. The southpaw also broke a tie with former skipper Ricky Ponting (5) for Australia’s most World Cup centurion.
Only Indian captain Rohit Sharma has more World Cup hundreds than David Warner, who has seven.
Apart from playing a vital role in Australia winning the 2015 World Cup, David Warner boasts a sensational record in the showpiece event. He has scored 1,324 runs at an average of 63.04 and a strike rate of over 100 in 23 World Cup games.
It’s also worth noting that half of David Warner’s six World Cup hundreds have been 150+, with the 178 against Afghanistan in 2015 being the highest in Perth.
Australia Shows No Mercy to Netherlands with Big Score
After winning the toss and batting first, Australia is on course for another massive total against the Netherlands. Following their 62-run victory over Pakistan, the Australians are heading in the same way.
While David Warner and Mitchell Marsh’s opening duo could not repeat their exploits from a few days ago, it was Steve Smith’s time to provide company for David Warner.
Following Marsh’s dismissal in the fourth over, the duo combined 132 runs off 118 balls for the second wicket to drive Australia to a commanding 160/2 in the 24th over.
Despite Smith’s well-made 71 off 68 balls, Marnus Labuschagne ensured that the momentum continued with an even quicker 62 off 47 balls. Despite the loss of the partnership and other middle-order wickets, the five-time world champions scored 300 runs for the second time in a row.
Following a disastrous start to their 2023 World Cup campaign with severe defeats to India and South Africa, the Men in Yellow have rebounded with stunning victories against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
At 312/6 in 45 overs, they look to be on track for a hat trick, with Glenn Maxwell batting on 34 off 20 and Pat Cummins coming to the crease on two.
