Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s dismal luck with the toss persisted as he lost his 10th coin flip of the season to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) before their 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash in Dharamsala on Sunday.

Gaikwad’s only toss win came in CSK’s home victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Since then, he has lost six matches in a row.

The captain claims that he has practiced coin tosses in the dugout and has been successful, but he has yet to win when it counts.

Before flipping the coin, PBKS captain Sam Curran smirked at his counterpart, while Danny Morrison discussed Gaikwad’s bad luck when the CSK captain got it incorrect.

“I think we have to focus on the process and do things right. We like to focus on what mistakes that we made and try to rectify those. This season there has been a lot of injuries, flu and we forced to make quite a few changes. Losing 10 tosses and winning five games is still a positive.”

PBKS has once again put CSK in to bat first in the IPL 2024, as they look for their third straight win to stay in the playoff race. Curran and his team also have a five-match winning streak versus the defending champions, which began in 2021.

Fans responded to Gaikwad’s incredible run with the coin on social media immediately following the toss. Here are some reactions on Twitter:

“I feel like life is just a game of toss and I am Ruturaj Gaikwad,” one tweet read.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad might lose 15 tosses out of 14 matches,” another tweet read.

“L in ruturaj gaikwad stands for luck at toss,” one fan wrote.

Former CSK captain MS Dhoni, like Gaikwad in the current season, has had bad luck with the toss at times. During the 2012 IPL season, the CSK skipper lost 12 tosses.

The Men in Yellow went on to play the final that season, which was also held in Chennai, much like the 2024 final. However, CSK fell against KKR by five wickets after failing to defend 191 at home.
