David Warner, the cricketer from Australia, has a respectable track record as a captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warner was appointed captain of the Delhi Capitals for the forthcoming IPL season on March 16, 2023. The franchise’s various social media platforms shared this information with the public.
Warner took over as captain of the Delhi Capitals from Rishabh Pant for the 2023 IPL season only. Unfortunately, for the upcoming IPL season, Pant isn’t expected to fully recover from his car accident on December 30, 2022. Warner will lead the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023, with Indian all-rounder Axar Patel as vice-captain.
In 2013, David Warner served as the captain for the first time in the Indian Premier League. The franchise formerly known as the Delhi Daredevils has appointed the Aussie as interim captain for a few matches.
In the Chepauk match against CSK, permanent captain Mahela Jayawardene was unavailable because of the rage against Sri Lanka in Tamil Nadu. David Warner was chosen as captain for the RCB game because Jayawardene wanted him to get some experience leading the team before the CSK game he would be joining.
Delhi lost both IPL 2013 matches against RCB and CSK, so that David Warner could have gotten off to a better start as a captain.
Finally, in 2014, Warner joined the emerging Sunrisers Hyderabad squad. In 2015, he took over as SRH captain instead of Daren Sammy. Because of their loss to Mumbai Indians in their final league stage match, which acted as an elimination match, the Orange Army did not advance to the playoffs.
After a thrilling victory over RCB in the IPL 2016 final, Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the franchise’s first-ever IPL Trophy. He became the first captain in IPL history to win the playoff series after leading his team to a third-place finish in the group stage.
In the 2017 IPL season, SRH won 8 of their 14 regular league games but was eliminated by KKR in the playoff. Warner’s participation in the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town resulted in his suspension from the IPL 2018 season.
The Australian participated again as a player in the competition in 2019. At the beginning of the IPL 2020 season, SRH named Warner the captain. The squad beat RCB in the Eliminator but failed to win against Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2.
Five defeats in the first six matches of the IPL 2021 prompted SRH to remove Warner as captain and replace him with Kane Williamson.
With David Warner at the helm, SRH won 35 matches and lost 30 games in all 67 matches. His overall IPL record as captain is 35 wins from 69 games played, with a win percentage of 52.17%.
