Cricket Australia announced on Sunday that Matthew Kuhnemann, an Australian left-arm spinner, has been picked in the squad for the Test series in India, while Mitchell Swepson will be returning home in order to welcome the arrival of his first child before the start of next week’s second match.
Kuhnemman will provide Australia with an additional left-arm spin bowler alongside Ashton Agar, who was not part of the team in the first Test at Nagpur, which the Aussies lost by a huge margin of an inning and 132 runs in just three days.
Andrew McDonald, the head coach of Australia, indicated that Kuhnemman could be given the chance to appear in his first Test match during the second Test in New Delhi starting on Friday, should the team decide to field three spinners.
McDonald stated that if the team decides to utilize three spinners, then they must have back-up players ready. Swepson, who did not take part in the Nagpur Test, will travel back to Brisbane to be with his pregnant partner while the rest of the team gets ready for the next game.
Australia is anticipating the return of all-rounder Cameron Green for the second Test match after he was absent from the initial game due to a finger injury. Mitchell Starc is expected to be available, but Captain Pat Cummins has decided not to make any changes to the team after the defeat in Nagpur.
