Throughout cricket history, there have been several occasions in which two brothers have lined up in the same team, whether at the international level or during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Within the IPL, the Pathan brothers, Marsh siblings, Hussey brothers, and Pandya brothers have all stepped onto the pitch together for different or the same franchises either simultaneously or at different times.
Here, we look at three pairs of brothers who played for the same team in IPL history:
3) Morkel brothers (Delhi Daredevils)
Albie was originally signed by the Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural IPL tournament to serve as an all-rounder and finisher. He was instrumental in their two consecutive title wins. Unfortunately, his form suffered in 2015 when he played for the Delhi Daredevils, resulting in his release the next season. Morne Morkel was instead picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in 2008 and then transferred to the Delhi team in 2011, where he joined forces with Ajit Agarkar and Irfan Pathan to form a successful combination.
2) Hussey brothers (Chennai Super Kings)
Michael Hussey was an integral part of the foundation of the Chennai Super Kings in 2008 and played a key role in their back-to-back IPL titles in 2010 and 2011. Later, he featured for the Mumbai Indians before joining the CSK management as a coach. Interestingly, David Hussey did not initially participate with the CSK team. Rather, he assisted as a commentator during IPL 2014 when CSK signed him to replace the injured Dwayne Bravo.
1) Pandya brothers (Mumbai Indians)
The Mumbai Indians showed faith in Hardik Pandya back in 2015, signing him for a base price of ₹10 lakhs in the IPL auction. This decision paid off almost immediately, as the young all-rounder made his Indian team debut in Australia shortly after his first IPL season.
The next year, MI invested a comparatively higher amount – ₹2 crores – in Hardik’s elder brother Krunal Pandya. Krunal’s impressive domestic career became evident in his subsequent performances for MI. The trio of Hardik, Krunal and Kieron Pollard played a big role in MI’s 2019 victory.
