Many people were surprised when Sandeep Sharma was released by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) before the IPL 2023 auction. The experienced pacer failed to attract any bids, despite the need for dependable bowling options among a number of teams. Sharma expressed his disappointment with not getting picked up in an interview following the auction. Fortunately, a fortuitous injury to Rajasthan Royals (RR) speedster P Krishna gave Sharma an opportunity to join the team. Here are three reasons why RR’s move to recruit Sharma is justified:
3) IPL record of Sandeep Sharma
Sandeep Sharma has been an impressive performer in the IPL, having played 104 games and taking 114 wickets at an economy rate of 7.77. His successes when bowling with the new ball have earned him a reputation as a dependable bowler. Of those 114 wickets, Sharma has an impressive 53 wickets taken in the powerplay, making him the second-most successful in IPL history, just behind Bhuvneshwar Kumar. RR can count on him as an impact player who can bowl four overs straight and then be replaced.
2) Can assist Trent Boult in the powerplay
If conditions allow for sufficient swing and seam movement, Sharma and Boult could make the opening four overs a challenge for the opposition. Their lack of ‘express’ pace should not be considered a compromise, as they can effectively hunt for wickets as a pair with the new ball.
1) Experience in IPL
The Rajasthan Royals were in a difficult position when their key player Prasidh Krishna was injured, as there weren’t many experienced Indian bowlers to replace him. However, they managed to find an experienced alternative in Sandeep Sharma – who had previously done well in the IPL. If he manages to take off from the start, it will be an invaluable boost for RR’s prospects early in the tournament.
