Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls have made history by becoming the 18th pair to both score double centuries in a Test match, with Williamson’s 215 and Nicholls’ unbeaten 200 helping New Zealand declare on 580-4 against Sri Lanka at Wellington. Here are three other instances where two batters achieved the same feat in Test matches:
#1 Marnus Labushchagne and Steve Smith
Australia’s Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne led the way to an emphatic victory against the West Indies in 2022, with both batsmen registering double centuries. Labuschagne notched a score of 204 while Smith, the ex-captain, finished unbeaten on 200 as the Australians ended their first innings with an imposing total of 598.
#2 Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke
Australia put on a brilliant show at the fourth Test of the 2011-12 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide, setting a huge target of 604 runs before declaring their innings. The top performers were Ricky Ponting with 221 runs and Michael Clarke with a double century of 210 runs, completely overwhelming the Indian bowling attack.
#3 Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman
In 2008, Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman put on an unforgettable performance in a Test match against Australia, with each of them scoring double centuries; the first time two Indian batters had ever achieved this feat in the same innings. Thanks to their impressive 206 and 200, respectively, India managed to reach a total of 613 runs. Unfortunately, the match ended in a draw as both sides found it a comfortable batting pitch.
